I seem to be saying just the opposite of everyone else, but I think a small room is best. I like to positiion my bell in such a way that the sound is reflected right back at me. This way I can hear the EXACT sound that's coming out of my bell, not a sound that's been "smoothed out" by the room. You may not like what you hear at first, but your tone will improve fast. I currently practice in a room about 5x8 feet with an 45 degree eave along one side. I usually point my bell right at the eave.
