This approach is filled with foolishness, in my humble opinion. It teaches nothing to the students about the value of public or other people's property, which is a rampant condition as I see it. It reinforces the notion that property is disposable, and forms terrible habits that will get the in trouble in the future.

It is much better to number the parts, issue them to individuals, and charge them for the missing parts if they are not turned in. Sure, it's more work to keep up with the accountability system, but by investing that work, you show the students that the property is worth something. If that lesson doesn't take, then the bill their parents have to pay before they can get their grades (hopefully that's still allowed) will, coupled with the F they make for each day they don't have their music in class.

By assuming that kids will be irresponsible and that they will therefore lose music, you teach them that it is okay to be irresponsible. Those low expectations tend to be self-fulfilling.

It also deprives them of the pleasure of reading music printed in a real press on real paper, that is easy to sort through in the music folder.
