Rick, I agree totally that the kids and parents should cough up the money to replace the parts, but in today's schools of the administrators backing the parents and not the teachers, it's not reality. In ALL the schools I've taught in, not one administrator would have back me up trying to collect (try collecting outstanding fundraising money when the principal doesn't care if a student "steals" from the band). One principal told me that band music is under $50 (at that time) and is considered disposable, the same as a math workbook. The Catch 22 is that music that's unusable due to missing parts, the school won't have the $$ to replace it. I would say well over 50% of the BDs I know never give the student the originals, especially marching band music.
