It is sometimes possible to discover where a problem is without prying too deeply. I would not suggest that the teacher try to solve every problem a student may have, but if you know there is one and have some clue what it is, it may be possible to alert somebody with the appropriate skills and such to go deeper and find the solution.

A simple answer to a simple question may give great insight and showing that one cares and is "there" to help may be all that is needed. There are no set, simple answers which apply in all cases and the teacher may not be able to help. The one on one framework of private lessons does make for a wide range of possibilities.

A good teacher learns from the student - sometimes only that there is nothing that can be done to help. It's all part of living with other people.
