Well Klaus I couldn't agree more that a teacher is more than just "teaching you the tuba" they should be a sort of friend, and even a role-model, as we all know you don't become employed as a musician by just being able to play your instrument well. The sort of teacher you are describing reminds me of a college teacher, someone you usually bond with. The post, to my ears, made it sound as if this female student was high school student (just apart of the herd) that takes from the local graduate student at the "whatever" college. In that kind of situation, where in my opinion the relationship is not as close, I personally don't think the teacher should go digging around in family history, etc....just my .02 though.
its a good thing that as long as you pay tuition you can put the name on your resume, eh??
