I couldn't have said it better. And, the reason why I phrased it as I did, in terms of "which do you prefer" was to not state that one way is better, because I don't think one way is better. I think that each approach works on certain kinds of people, and the job of the student is to find the kind of teacher who speaks the teaching language that fits the student. I also think that it's good to expose yourself to the other kind of teacher once in a while, to make sure you're not missing something. My past frustrations have been due to an inability to find the kind of teacher I need.

That said, I'm a horrid tennis player but a competent tennis coach, because I can see what people are doing and help them fix it. Most of the coaches on the pro tour are not former #1 players, either. I think those of us who have had to struggle to learn are, in general, better prepared to help other strugglers.

I'm curious as to what embouchure fault you're trying to correct.
