What is your friend's setup on the Fender J?
Fretless? Flat wounds? Thumb player? Foam at the bridge?
I've heard some nice Fender sounds here and there, but I don't recall mistaking them for a good tuba. . . . Maybe a P-bass w/big flatwounds could do it, though
Also, was he intentionally going for a tuba sound, or did it just work out that way?
