U.P.S. maximum allowable dimension(length + girth) is only somewhere in the 130-something inches range.

FedEx is even less - the same as the Post Office, I think just under 110 inches.

A large tuba case, even without a carton around it, won't go via U.P.S. unless it "slips" by (unlikely).

Greyhound isn't particularly cheap, and their maximum insurance is low.

The cheapest common carrier (truckline) that I've found is Con-Way, as long you're shipping to their depots.
