I have always believed that the "resistance" in a tuba should be in the mouthpiece and leadpipe, not in the valve tubing. I don't like to feel a big change in resistance when I press several valves down. So I don't think lack of resistance would be the problem with Thayer type valves. If I wanted more resistance I would just switch to a narrower leadpipe or a smaller-throated mouthpiece.
