You've pretty much got it. I use a 60% silver solder that melts at about 1100 degrees--the rods are flux-coated. Oxyacetylene is the fastest rig for soldering, but you can also get decent results with MAPP gas.
Oh--one other thing. Soft solder can sometimes be made to fill or bridge a gap. Not so with hard solder--the parts to be soldered must be in contact. Hard solder either flows like water or is solid; there's really not much of a "plastic" state where it becomes viscous, like soft solder.
