For whatever it's worth, the 601 that I have can be played whisper quiet and doesn't require enormous amounts of air. After all, you don't fill the horn with air, you fill it with vibration, and the key to this is good lip action and an appropriate mouthpiece. Just because the horn's big doesn't mean that you have to blow the heck out of it, although the 601 can handle that, too.

To be honest, if he gets used to a big horn at home, he's probably going to be contemptuous of a compact convertable tuba after a while.
