My son was in the same boat just a little over 2 weeks ago - he is 17 and will be a performance major starting in August - the dentist recommended he get them out even though he had not yet felt any discomfort. We agonized over having the surgery done. He had 4 impacted teeth removed June 4th. Days 2 and 3 were slow but steady recovery days, oozing blood and no physical exertion. On Day 4 he actually tooted very lightly on the tuba, and buzzed and tooted a little every day after that. On Day 8 he had the stitches out. And from Day 8 forward he has been playing without any pain or discomfort as much as he wants. So, we had a very good outcome, and I am relieved that he now has it behind him.

I suggest you find a really good oral surgeon - don't let the dentist do it. Once you start college, there is never going to be a "good time" to do this, so I would go for it now.
