Well, I think I might have to side with your father on this one Tracy. Let me explain.

About ten years ago, my Son was thinking of majoring in music when he was having a great time in high school band. He played euphonium then trombone (section leader) and was band captain his senior year. I asked my Son to look at the gentleman he's taking trombone lessons from, Art Sares, (inherited Tommy Dorsey's gold plated King-2B trombone) who plays fantastically! Art has the best tone on trombone I have ever heard! Art worked in Las Vegas for 20-some years after doing orchestral work. Art is currently in south Florida teaching at the community college and playing in the 'Boca Pops Orch'. My point is, he's now in his 70's and still working. I suggested to my Son to think about majoring in something else he's interested in that he could make a living at more easily. Of course, I said, it's always up to him in what he chose for a major. I also pointed out that he could always do music as an 'avocation' rather than a 'vocation'.

My Son recently got his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering and says he's happy with his choice. He still loves music and still plays piano and trombone.

There are a lot of good musicians out there but only so many jobs. If you think you would also like to teach, then it would be easier to pay the bills. It's your choice... but choose carefully and wisely. Just my 2 cents worth Tracy. Good luck in what ever you choose.
