If you want to get an idea of how it might sound, patch the cracks with duct tape and smear Vasoline on the valves to tighten them up a bit. As for the tuning slide, there is an outside chance that a slide from a modern King tuba or sousaphone would fit. If not then you can rig something up with clear vinyl tubing and duct tape.
