We call this 'buddy breathing'. You be my buddy, and I'll do the breathing! 8^) Just kidding.

What Paul Gramann suggests should work. Talk it over between the two of you so one of you can fade out early -- say in the second measure -- while at the same time the other player cresendos in that measure. After the first player gets his/her breath, then that refreshed player can come in softly (sneak in) and build like Paul suggests, and the other player can pull back some and then get their breath. You'll have to practice this between the two of you before rehearsal so you know just what you're going to do, and then mark it on your music. Then you can surprise the conductor.

The conductor's instrument must be piano or drums where he can breathe any place, any time!? Good luck.
