I was just listening to CD reissues of Prokofiev's Cinderella, and Respighi's Feste Romane/Pines of Rome - all three works with Maazel conducting the Cleveland Orchestra. Wow, what a sound from Ron Bishop. For that matter, what a great orchestra! Now, several people have mentioned that Dohnanyi doesn't like Mr. Bishop to use his good, old Alex. I, for one, would like to register my disbelief and disappointment - if that's true. Anyone else care to comment on this subject, and I'd strongly recommend both of these recording to anyone interested in great playing (the Respighi reissue comes out in July in the U.S). The way the Clevelanders execute the opening section of Feste Romane is not to be believed! Check it out.
