What about going for the instrument repair for a one or two year stint, getting a job as a repairman (under a much more experienced technician), and working his way through college?

There is the military route as well. Rack up all the student loans you can and hit the service for four years. The Army will pay them back for you (ONLY if they are need based loans, and minus the interest) and you can get a head start on the masters. - or - Hit the service now and in four years have $50,000 - $60,000 for college... as well as a head start on the degree while you're in. This route can also help you buy some time to figure out what you want to do.

Whatever you decide, it should be something that you REALLY look forward to doing. Have fun. There are far too many people out there complaining about where they are and what they could/should be doing. They say that the grass is always greener on the other side... take your time, make a decision, and be confident in knowing that you have some pretty green grass there.
