I currently work at Hickey's Music(www.hickeys.com)[cheap plug...ahem]and I recently asked the brass repairman, Gary, about instrument repair.
He said: My advice to everyone who asks this question is....get a degree or some training (BOCES) to become a Machinist. It will make everything you do in the shop seem like child's play and it will prepare you for the challenges of the job. I wish I had done that.
I hope this offers you a different avenue to approach.
