For any professional aspirations, I doubt if any future employer would give much credit to an applicant without a degree. There's a certain minimal amount of knowledge and experience that is expected for professionals, and proof of this knowledge and experience is the diploma. Without it you would be relying on your teacher's recommendations alone. Chances are, unless your a phenom, without a degree you would likely be weeded out prior to any live auditions. Remember, most professional openings are extremely competitive. There are other routes you could take to break into the music world that would give you the experience necessary that doesn't require a degree, one of which is the military route.
