I taught a group of 5 absolute beginners on tuba at a camp in January. There ages were about 10. I found that the kids no trouble at all with getting a sound out of their horns. They were all playing on 3/4 Bb tubas. There were also 4 eupho players in the group and these players found the going no less (or more) difficult than the kids on the tuba.

So, if a kid is SO keen to play the tuba, then why give him a eupho to start off on. Switching later on is no big deal (I was one who went down this track) but, in most cases, starting out on eupho is no less difficult than starting out on tuba.
