A trombone player I play with regularly (he's a very good amateur) has a 10 year old son I have a friend whose 10 year son often observes our quintet rehearsals. He's about decided he wants to play the tuba rather than the other instruments. (Hey, he must be pretty smart, too?. His father has talked to me about helping find him a teacher. THe dad's idea is to start him off on Euphonium and then move him up to tuba later. I've taught high school students who already play another instrument and were switching to tuba but have no experience with someone that young just starting out. He may already play piano, which would take care of basic musical notation, etc. Should I try to find him a trumpet teacher who'd take him on How important is it that his first teacher be a tuba player? What do you think of his dad's idea of beginning on Euph? I assume we'd want to begin him on a 3/4 tuba if that was the way to go?
