I've seen pictures of 36J tubas that had front-action valves and a 6/4 body (Stauffer includes a picture of his when he was playing it in the 40's, and also a catalog cut sheet from the early thirties that described it), and I've expressed interest in tubas listed by Taylor as being a 36J that they told me was top-action with a forward bell. I asked about it at the time, possibly in response to someone else's thread, and recall an answer that the designations were reused for different instruments in different eras.

The Conn catalog that I own a copy of is at the office. It dates from the middle thirties and talks mostly about short-action tubas. I'll have to look at it tomorrow when I get to the office, but I'm not sure they even showed pictures of any of the 3xJ's.
