...Nielsen, actually. I know (and love) the CSO recording you're talking about, and if you find it overbearing, you should hear the live radio broacast they did at the same time. It was taped in 1966, and the legendary CSO brass were all in their prime. It's a study in perfectly tuned chords. Anyway, while I love hearing F tuba in an orchestra on many things, in my opinion, Nielsen 4th cries out for the weight of a CC tuba. If you want a gentler approach, then just play a little lighter...but on a CC. I've played it on bass trombone with three different orchestras (and I get to play it again in two weeks), and have always sat next to a CC tuba.
