It's a pleasure to get "pepped" up and refreshed by Rick's analytic mind, pragmatic thinking, and preference of facts - ... and all this in our world of tuba guys (of various "coleur") where - from my point of view - 75% of all instruments and other evaluations seem to be based on psychological, subjective considerations and even sometimes subconscious reactions as well as on fashion "laws".
By the way, as for the often discussed individual sound evaluations and puzzling about the decisive influences on the sonority, I think that the manufacturers are much more depending on physical laws, facts, and the related measurements than the tuba users. For example, if you look up Rudy Meinl's web page, you will find photos of the handcrafting manufacturing procedure - and (on the other hand) a monitor for measuring the amplitudes of every tuba after finishing the production run. The manufacterers know - we tuba guys believe ... that might be the difference!
