I don't know that I'd agree with the statement that the FF pedal is "definitely NOT a usable sound in playing any thing musical!". At the recent New Sousa Band concerts last January, we did a rendition of Irish Tune from County Derry. The last five notes of the piece work quite well as low Bb, low A, low G, pedal C, pedal F. This is especially effective when you have at least three players and all three octaves of the progression are covered. It is crucial that you play the notes absolutely in tune for this progression to work but, when done correctly, it makes an incredible sound.
