I learned on BBb, play a CC now, and prefer the CC. I do believe there are nice BBb tubas out there. I like the 5v miraphone BBb, but its way overpriced. The BBbs here are not the greatest, but they aren't the worst. I consider myself a pretty good tuba player, and I have a lot of trouble playing them. I double on tenor trombone and euphonium very often, and I don't encounter problems.
