Is a "triple rim" MP rare?

I just got a "stunning" horn: a legendary B & F pre WWII CC tuba that I found in Spain. Great horn, perfect intonation etc. It came with a mouthpiece having 3 optional MP rings with a thread to scew them onto the cup - all in different rim sizes. With the medium size all registers come up already with super results, but with the smaller or the larger ring/rim sizes, the horn is even more specialized either for low or high register.
Does anybody know, why this solution obviously is not to be found too often, since I never saw one like this before. Seems to save on costs for various complete MPs, or am I wrong?
Cheers, Volker
