I think you guys are missing the point. Joe suggested that it might be worthwhile to hear the musicality of a fine cellist miked up close in a small ensemble, playing a part that is usually miked from a distance in an orchestra hall by tubas, whose sound comes in large measure from the room, and somewhat after the fact at that. The basis for the value in this was two-fold: 1.) hearing great musical interpretation from other than just tuba players on a melody that we play, and 2.) hearing the context of the rhythmic accuracy in a way that is hard to reproduce in an orchestral recording.

Tain't nobody said nuthin about emulating the sound of the cello.
