I've used a Martin 6/4 BBb for most of this summer in orchestra and band. It has both upright and recording bells, and I've had a lot of fun playing the outdoor concerts with the bell-front. Of course I also use a Rudy Meinl 5/4 CC, a home-built King 3/4 5-valve CC, a Yamaha 381 Eb and a Yamaha 5-valve rotary compensating-double F tuba. They all have their place. The idea of sticking to one key of tuba seems ludicrous to me. Any pro worth his salt ought to be able to pick up any of the 4 bass/contrabass tubas and use them with nearly equal facility. This Wednesday night I'll even play some of the band concert that I'm doing on ophicleide. If you label yourself as a certain 'key' tubist you are only imposing stupid artificial limitations and implying you are only capable of mastering one key of instrument.
