Let me make it clear that I was refering to professionals when I said that one should be able to play all of the tubas with equal facility. Having said that, I don't think it takes extra special mental abilities to apply the same fingering patterns that one already knows to a different anchor point of the staff. It does take practice and dedication to get it down to a point where one is comfortable doing it. But after all it is our job, and, as pros, we must master all phases of the task to be considered thus. When I was a student my teacher, Bill Bell, was able to play them all, so I just assumed that was expected of me too.
