No, I think the reason that TT uses them in their tuba ensemble is that all of those other bariphones you mentioned are very round and mellow sounding...too muddy for the ensemble l-o-w voicings. Again, U.S. bell-fronts would accomplish the same thing with better intonation, but with far less prestige.
