I can only give personal experience (as one who does not "just push buttons and expect good sound") on the oval euphoniums. I have played a great deal of literature on these horns, band, ensemble, solos, and I can attest to the inherent intonation problems. The tubas are actually quite good, but the ovals are not. The reason they work so very well in the ensemble setting is that they all sound alike. When you put six of them on the front row, they sound like one big (although not great) horn. If you did the same with six Bessons, Willsons, or Hirsbruners... you would hear six different sounds. How many people play these euphoniums as solo horns?
