No offense to Scott and Klaus, but I have a feeling that the story went something like this...

"We need a way to pitch these new, bigger baritones to the school districts in a way that will make them want to buy both," says Bill the Marketing Man.

"We could call them some fancy name, like Euphonic Horn", replied Fred the Ad Copywriter.

"No," says Bill. "That's already been used. Let's see, Trombonium--nope, that's been used, too. What else is there? How about Euphonium?"

"Yeah" responded Fred. "And that name hasn't been trademarked and we can call it our own."

Of course, neither Bill nor Fred ever knew Greek or Latin. But they knew that their word had to be different from what any of their competition might have used, even if that meant making up a new one.
