But you're missing the key point. The instrument is "downstream" of the vibrating source.
The human being is the vibrating source. The acoustical source is not "just the lips" -- it is the lungs, windpipe, cheeks, sinuses, cheeks, mouth cavity, tongue, lips ... all acting as a unit. The lungs are expanding and contracting -- so why not the cheeks? There may be eddies in the lung and in the sinuses -- so why not in the cheeks?

By the way, if the system is "closed", no air is wasted, as anyone is aware who has had to wait for the cutoff while blowing that last low note. On the other hand, some air may be wasted out the nose and around the lips. That was the point of the earlier thread ... the one the censor deleted.
