As we enter into a new era of tuba performance, I am sure we will see some improvements.
Maybe physical air support will be taken away by computer technology??
Here is my perception of a future tuba:
Instead of a valve section, a computer interphase will be installed connecting to all the branches and lead pipe. Since sound is produced by vibrations, the mouthpiece will be converted into a kind of "pick up" device that will transmit the waves into the computer interphase. A series of air pumps will be activated and will pump air into the appropriate branches, depending upon the sound or note that is needed.
The student of a tuba of this design would really need to be trained on ear training and the concepts of articulation, musical phrasing, and musical form. ( 12-tone, polytonality, etc...)
Just imagine the possibilities: increase in range with a random thought
no more grueling technical exercises
I guess the old "Professor Harold Hill Think System would really apply"??????
Please comment on your tuba improvements for the next generation.
