In fact, you are absolutely correct.

Berlioz originally scored the Fantastique for two ophicleides, in C & Bb. The famous Dies Irae section that is so often today played FFF and ominously was intended by the composer to be a mockery of a death mass. Thus the scoring of mostly comical sounding instruments including the ophicleides.

Not to disparage anybody's interpretation of the work, I just feel that the whole intent of this section of the piece, as well as much of the execution of the ophicleide parts by modern day tubists, often misses the composer's mark.

My opinion for what its worth...
