Well, I disagree. You have to work with your boss (the conductor) but conductors come and go while the musicians remain. And the work those musicians do defines their musical career to a large extent. I prefer to be historically accurate and respect the wishes of the composer rather than a conductor who may be trying some new interpretation simply to be different and set himself apart from the mainstream. Certainly, I'll speak with a conductor when my interpretation and his differ widely but usually this isn't the case.
I'm always very careful about the quality of the art that I put my name on.
