Try this: (it takes some practice) Play into your horn wile humming a different note than you're playing. You'll get what's called a "dual-harmonic". Basically it lets you play chords on a brass instrument. Now try this: Play into your horn while growling in the back of your throat (kinda like rough humming) you'll get that growling sound your looking for. I've heard of people who can actually growl, hum, and play at the same time so that they can actually play triads on a tuba...
