Unfortunately, it sounds like your conductor wants to buy or rent something cheap and present a tuba solo as a novelty. (He might already have the parts to Carnival of Venice in his library from sometime in the past when a trumpeter did it.) If you want, print out my post, show it to him, and ask him if my guess is correct. At least you can find out quickly what's going on...Then again, I'm known to be a bit more "direct" (especially for a Southerner) than some are.
