I second the nod to Mahler 6. That symphony covers more ground than any other I know of. The other thing is that, even though Mahler was pretty good at writing effective endings to his symphonies, I think the end of the 6th is his finest. I'm really a big fan of programmatic style composing and if you don't know the stories behind the Mahler symphonies, you would be well advised to read about them. I know that after reading the program to the 6th, I realized I never truly appreciated it for what it was. I was never more detached from reality as I was playing Mahler 6 though that could have been the hyperventilating! :)
