At the risk of offending (trying to possibly offer insight), I think that you might be deceiving yourself, aurally. I know a VERY fine (these days) french horn player who used to go out in the woods and practice all of the time. He had a reputation (back then) of "sounding like a mule". He generally played too loudly and with bad intonation. Another's post towards the end of this thread addresses, and probably explains, this phenomenon.

I remember playing outdoors when I was a teenager up at Interlochen when all of the practice rooms were taken. I think that I was doing the same thing...playing VERY loudly (because of the LACK of reverberation "feedback") and out of tune some (because notes "died" instantly once released and there was no reverberation overlap, and because of playing beyond my level of control).

I am just suggesting that you might re-evaluate what is going on.
