It's not the outdoors playing that kills intonation. It's the lack of efficient and ultra-specific instruction in most groups that's the problem. The good ones will have every member able to recite the tendencies of their instrument, and they will be taught how to listen in a nearly reverb-free environment.

Plus, about 90% of marching bands' populations are players who haven't touched their horns in 4 (or 8!) months, and that's definitely not good for solid playing qualities. If they played daily in a group setting during that time, there'd be hope.
