I have to say that the sound of the instrument has to be the first and foremost concern when selecting your musical "voice". I am of the opinion that everything else (intonation, alternate fingerings, technical facility) can be learned or compensated for. While I'm not going to say that any good player can't make a given instrument sound great, I will say that a good player can still only go so far with the sound of a given instrument. I still see the function of an instrument as a lense through which the player projects his/her capabilities and ideas. Doesn't it make sense to be certain that the lense projects the kind of image you want? Focus can always be adjusted but the image has to be yours. I think the popularity of the Rudolf Meinl and Alexander lines of tubas speak to players' preferences in these matters.
