Sound before anything.....

I have always believed that the most important aspect of my playing is my sound. I was lucky enough to be able to study with Arnold Jacobs and he always said that sound was the #1 concern. I have been playing profesionaly for about 13 years. I do all of my playing on an Alexander 4/4 5 valve CC. I have heard a lot of talk about alternate fingerings and I don't know what all the fuss is over. If you play in tune, what difference does it make if you use alternate fingerings. The Alexander tubas have a sound that is so great I would use alternate fingerings for every note if I had to. I only have to use a few on mine and having the 5th valve also helps. What is your take?
