I've found that if you walk up to the curb side check-in (Sky-cap, I think), and hand the guy/girl $10 or $15 they will usually let you on the plane with as much baggage as you have. I have flown with a euphonium Bugle, a large CC tuba, 2 suitcases and a carry-on in that manner. It's at least worth a shot. I know that paying for the extra baggage (if they allow it) is very expensive. I believe that they charge by the pound, and if you've got a PT-6 in a Walt Johnson case, you're talking around 60+lbs!
