It's interesting to me that Steve would emphasize that the 983, "does NOT have a consistent tone throughout the range". It just goes to show how personal these things can be, because I've found the 983 to be one of the most consistent horns from bottom to top of ANY that I've ever tried. That's what greatly appeals to me about the horn. I once tried the 5-valve Willson Eb for a bit, and that particular horn clearly had three or four different registers in terms of how they sounded, and how they felt. I also don't find the 983 to be terribly stuffy in the low range either. The problem with the 983 is a different one: it's not a surrogate contrabass tuba, and it's not a euphonium, as Steve has suggested. It is what it is. Pat Sheridan would be the first to tell you that it's a bass tuba - nothing more, and nothing less.
