I don't have expertise in this area, but the lead-pipe on my B&S has a very long solder joint on the bell and across the top main bow. If I am playing in a loud room with a very high volume (read playing with rock drummer and an electric guitar/bass), then there are notes that become difficult to push-through. I figure that this is because the tuba bell is such a good collector of ambient sound and I'm pushing against some sort of sympathetic vibration happening in the tuba bell. I haven't modified my lead-pipe, but I've always wondered if it could make a difference to have the leadpipe removed from being a conductor of these vibrations. I suspect it's a modification with a low return.
