I've done this on enough different tubas to GUESS (yes, I'm suspect of my own observations) that I'm correct about the "feel".

The mouthpiece angle is so extremely close to the same, I wouldn't think that was it. Just like the folks who buy into the heavy mouthpiece hokus-pokus, it probably does indeed feel different...

heavy mouthpiece: less vibration
detached mouthpipe: more vibration

...but the SOUND coming out the bell is probably virtually identical to non-heavy mouthpiece and attached mouthpipe.

I believe that the more "solid feel" of the heavy mouthpiece gives users the illusion of more sound "transferring" through the instrument - and the detached mouthpipe gives users the illusion (again, due to feel) of "more vibration" activating the sound.
