My 2155 in the flight trunk almost always gets me nailed for both oversize and overwight, even on Southwest. I've found, however, that the best way to avoid the charges are to check the tuba at the curb with a skycap, as they seemingly can never be bothered charging you the extra money. In return, I pass them a $20 tip which keeps them honest and careful with the horn.

$20 each way is certainoly better than $100+.
