I agree with your statements, but I think there IS another way to look at it. The orchestra is asking other professionals to donate to the cause. I think it is appropriate, and both symbolic and meaningful, if the orchestra MEMBERS also donate. The rich fat cats donate what THEY have the most of -- money -- and I think it's great if the musicians donate what THEY have the most of -- time.

The tough part of this for me is that, unless the entire orchestra unanimously agrees to those terms, then someone is MAKING them donate the concert. At that point, it is no longer a donation.

Joe Baker, who DOES ultimately agree that this should not be forced on the players.
